Competent Communicator Activity #1

 

Roles & Situation:

§        One person is to act as customer #1 needing help finding something

§        One person is to act as a customer #2 in line checking out

§        One person is to act as the one & only salesperson who is distracted & uncooperative

§        The Place: a music store

 

§        Customer #1 needs help, but the store’s salesperson, the only one on duty, is on the phone and ringing up customer #2’s purchase. Customer #1 is getting impatient and irritated.

 

§        The customer #2’s is in line is getting irritated that the salesperson is not fully attending to the task at hand.

 

§        The salesperson is on the telephone dealing with an upset customer from earlier in the day.

 

Requirements:

§        your scenario must last 1 minute

§        each person must speak at least 5 times with substance (no one-two liners)

§        each person must be audible

§        each person must use word choice that fits the context & role

§        each person must just talk normally—do not use notes—naturally say what you would say in that context

§        you will perform this in front of the class; do not concern yourself w/ props

 

Time Limit:

§        Once you are done reading & have received your scenario, you will have at least 15 minutes to create this performance—you are not guaranteed any more time that 15 minutes, so work diligently.

Competent Communicator Activity #2

 

Roles & Situation:

§        One person is to act as customer #1 needing help finding something

§        One person is to act as a customer #2 in line checking out

§        One person is to act as the one & only salesperson who is distracted & uncooperative

§        The Place: a music store

 

§        Customer #1 needs help, but the store’s salesperson, the only one on duty, is on the phone and ringing up customer #2’s purchase. Customer #1 is very patient.

 

§        The customer #2’s is in line is getting irritated at first that the salesperson is not fully attending to the task at hand, but becomes understanding when they realize that this is the only salesperson on hand.

 

§        The salesperson is on the telephone dealing with an upset customer from earlier in the day. They calmly try to please the two in-store customers and deal appropriately with the phone call.

Roles & Situation:

§        One person is to act as customer #1 needing help finding something

§        One person is to act as a customer #2 in line checking out

§        One person is to act as the one & only salesperson who is distracted & uncooperative

§        The Place: a music store

 

§        Customer #1 needs help, but the store’s salesperson, the only one on duty, is ignoring their quick questions and continues to ring up customer #2’s purchase.

 

§        The customer #2’s is in line and is very slow. They do not seem to care that the salesperson needs to attend to another customer.

 

§        The salesperson is unfriendly, distracted and apparently grumpy due to the situation of being the lone salesperson on duty.

Roles & Situation:

§        One person is to act as customer #1 waiting to be waited on

§        One person is to act as a customer #2 who waited extra long for their food & still got the incorrect order brought to them

§        One person is to act as the one & only waiter/waitress who is distracted & uncooperative

§        The Place: a restaurant

 

§        Customer #1 does not appreciate being ignored, but is nice when the waitress/waiter apologizes.

 

§        The customer #2’s is extremely upset & irritated and voices their complaints inappropriately.

 

§        The waiter/waitress is friendly & doing their best, but is obviously disturbed by customer #2’s comments, but the waiter/waitress is always professional.

Roles & Situation:

§        One person is to act as customer #1 waiting to be waited on

§        One person is to act as a customer #2 who waited extra long for their food & still got the incorrect order brought to them

§        One person is to act as the one & only waiter/waitress

§        The waiter/waitress is doing their best, but responds inappropriately to customer’s #2’s comments by making remarks that customer #1 can hear. The waiter/waitress is quite unprofessional.

 

§        Customer #1 does not appreciate being ignored, but is nice to the waitress/waiter when they apologize, but the customer #1 joins in with the waiter/waitress on making fun of customer #2’s concerns.

 

§        The customer #2’s is not happy and voices their complaints politely and appropriately, but their comments upset the waiter/waitress.

This one is for pairs (not teams of 3)

 

Roles & Situation:

§        One person is to act as a customer waiting to be waited on at the bank

§        One person is to act as a teller in the bank who has to work the inside window as well as the inside desk because people did not show up for work on a Saturday morning

§        The Place: a small-town bank

 

Requirements:

§        you will present two scenarios

§        the 1st performance will demonstrate inappropriate professional comments by the teller, the customer may respond appropriate or inappropriately—that is your choice

§        the 2nd performance will demonstrate appropriate professional comments by the teller, but the customer is one who seems to never be happy

§        each scenario must last 30 seconds each

§        each person must speak at least 5 times with substance (no one-two liners)

§        each person must be audible

§        each person must use word choice that fits the context & role

§        each person must just talk normally—do not use notes—naturally say what you would say in that context

§        you will perform this in front of the class; do not concern yourself w/ props
