         prepares listener to understand speaker's message

main idea of speech; clear statement of topic






clarify what you mean, define any terms used in your thesis statement so audience is on the same wave length with you






gives audience needed info before you begin your speech



consists of one of the three:



  • history of topic
  • current status of topic
  • philosophical stance or position you're taking
