a reference to something outside the reading that the author expect the reader to know about; common references are to the Bible, literature, history, & mythology

events that are happening at the same time, often w/out the main character’s knowledge

 

 

personification

gives human characteristics to nonhuman things

 

 

plot

beginning of a story revealing the setting, characters and hint of the conflict
