Formatting a Works Cited Page

To Set Spacing

Before typing anything...

·        go to the format pull down menu

o       paragraph

§         indents & spacing (it’s the 1st tab)

·         under spacing section, set document to double space

·         under indentations section, set hanging indent

o        to the right of that, where it says by, it should automatically change to .5

            • if it doesn’t, set it at .5

Do not hit tab—ever—during the typing of this WC page!

Do not ever hit enter twice during the typing of the document.

When to Type in the Information

·        put your works cited slips in ABC order by the first word listed on the form

·        type in all the entries first in Arial 12

·        hit enter at the end of an entry for the cursor to move to the far left margin

o         when your entry takes up more than one line, the next line will automatically indent; this is correct

o         see examples below for how a WC with three sources of varying lengths and info might look

Example:

Harris, Melodie. “Spending Two Decades of my Life with Seventh Graders in Room 208 in Small Town America.” Education

Digest. 5 Sept. 2008: 15-22.

“Small Town America with Seventh Graders.” Reader’s Digest. 5 December 2008: 56-69.

Ziplox, Larry. “My Wife is the Best and That’s why I Tied the Knot all those Years Ago.” Marriage Partnership Magazine. 24

October 2008: 112-115.

·        when done, place cursor at the beginning of the first entry

o        hit enter once, move cursor up above it to the blank line

o        type in Works Cited and then center Works Cited (do not center the entire document)

o       the spacing should all be correct then—there should not be extra double-spacing between the title of the page and the entries themselves

·         the entries should be in ABC order

o         if they are not, you need to cut & paste

§          or copy & paste in case the spacing gets messed up—then at least you still have the original way it was typed in then go & delete the one copied once you have it in the correct spot

·        double check that everything is double-spaced

Saving

·         save it in your communications folder in the other folder(s) as directed

·        name the file as directed—see the board
