The Civil War: A Nation Divided

 

 

 

Unit Objectives:

  • The students will identify the characteristics of the North and South that added to sectional differences.
  • The students will describe the major compromises over slavery in order to try and prevent war.
  • The students will chart the changes in slavery expansion leading up to the Civil War
  • The students will examine the more complex terms of Abolitionist, Underground Railroad, Fugitive Slave Act and Popular Sovereignty
  • The students will identify important events during KS territorial period and how that helped lead to the Civil War.
  • The students will identify the difficulties in KS during the territorial period
  • The students will recognize the acts of John Brown and how he became a “Martyr for Freedom”
  • The students will compare and contrast the views of John Brown’s actions from different points of view.
  • The students will describe the causes of the Civil War
  • The students will identify the wartime resources of both the Union and the Confederacy
  • The students will compare the resources and recognize which side had an early advantage.
  • The students will identify the major battles of the Civil war and explain their significance.
  • The students will recognize the turning point in the Civil War.
  • The students will identify the terms and conditions at the end of the Civil War
  • The students will predict problems that will face the nation due to the end of the Civil War.
