FAQ:

Where do I get the article?

Each day Miss Augustyn receives three copies of the Wichita Eagle and one USA Today.  These newspapers are located in her classroom and are available for the students to use.  Families do not have to purchase a newspaper for their child.

Do I have to use an article out of the newspaper?

You must have a copy of your article attached to the worksheet that is provided.  If you watch a news story on the television, you must find a written form of the story either in the newspaper or on the internet.  Internet stories are welcome, but there must be a print out of the article.

What happens if I forget to turn it in?

Current Events are not accepted late.  Student will receive no credit.

What if I am absent on Friday?

Students who are absent on Friday may turn in a Current Event on Monday (or the next day of their return).  It is the student’s responsibility to remember to turn in the assignment.   Miss Augustyn will not search for that student to remind him/her.  Current Events not turned in on Monday (or the next day of student’s return) will receive no credit.

How do Current Events affect my grade?

Current Events are worth 10 points in the grade book.  By the end of the nine weeks there will be 80-90 points in the grade book just from current events.  Usually missing one or two won’t have a huge affect on a student’s grade, but once a student misses his/her third one the grade is affected by 5-7 percentage points.  After the third missed current event the student will receive an AD where he/she is required to complete two current events; one for the week missed and one for the next week.

Do Current Events have to be completed at home?

Everything the students need to complete a current event is located in Miss Augustyn’s room.  This is an assignment that should be done on the students own time whether during advisory, before or after school, or when finished with assignments early in class.  The student is more than welcome to complete a Current Event at home, but it is not necessary.

What can I do to help my son or daughter with their Current Event?

Most of the time students are able to complete their Current Event at school during the week.  One of the best aids to this assignment is to offer simple reminders to your child throughout the week.
