Interactive Student Notebooks

What is an Interactive Student Notebook?

The ISN is an ongoing portfolio in which the students find new ways to receive and process information in class in an organized notebook. The students are given the opportunity to be creative and express their opinions at the same time as learning new information.  By the end of the year each student will have an individual portfolio that represents their personality and the material they learned in class.

How are the ISN books Organized?

The ISN is organized by two ways; unit topics and right/left side information

Unit Topics:

Each unit that is conducted in class has its own specific ISN Unit.  The material within those specific pages is related to the information presented in class during that unit.  ISN will be picked up at the end of each unit and graded by a teacher made scoring rubric, which the students will place on the designated page number.

Left/Right:

The left side of the notebooks will be the “teacher input” side.  This will be information that is provided to the students from the teacher in the form of notes, graphic organizer, or other activities.  The right side of the notebooks will be the “student output” side.  Here the students will take the information gained from the teacher and apply it in some way.  Some examples might be graphic organizers, cartoons, short stories, or poems.

**Note: The Left/Right pages have been modified from the original design by History Alive.

What materials are needed?

All materials for ISN are provided by Ms. Augustyn in class.  If the student takes home the book to work on an assignment then it is up to the student to find materials that may be needed.

How is ISN graded?

ISN will be picked up and graded at the end of each unit.  The students will receive a grade sheet in which they will paste onto a designated page in the book.  Some activities will be worth many points, while others may not be graded at all.  I will not tell the students ahead of time which assignments are graded and which is not.
