Kansas Becomes a State

Chapter 5

On January 29, 1861 Kansas was approved as the 34th state in the United States of America.  Our road to statehood had been one of the most difficult the country had ever seen.  Kansans were proud to become part of the Union as a free state.  Three months after Kansas’ induction into the USA we split apart to begin the bloodiest war in our history, the Civil War.
