Protists/Fungi

Intro. to Plants

Tree Classifying

Compare and contrast the two and identify them as separate kingdoms.  Graphic organizer will be provided.

   Differences between plants and animals:

1.)            Cell wall

2.)            Photosyntheses

3.)            Stationary Movement.

4.)            Plants have cuticle.

Students will do an exploratory lab where they have to take a bag of various objects and classify those using colors, shape, texture, or some other characteristic. Next, they will be given 6 leaves and classify them in a similar fashion.

Students will do a lab in which they will dissect, identify, and then cook mushrooms as an exploratory lab.

Use burners in the lab. Be aware of hot plates and splattering while preparing fungus.

Activities

1.)            Seed dispersement. (Take a seed and modify it so it will be dipersed among nature.)

2.)            Leaf catalogs.

3.)            Inquiry wheat germination lab. How can I get my wheat to germinate faster?

This will lead into the camping trip activity known as tree classifying. Each pair of students is given a key then they will go on a hike and look for marked trees, then classify them and name each.
