BREAST FEEDING Born to Learn
Curriculum www.patnc.org
Your baby will benefit in many ways when you breastfeed. Breast milk is the ideal food for an infant,
easy to digest and full of antibodies to prevent illness.
Breastfeeding is a new skill to be learned. Here are some tips……
*Be patient
*Take a
breastfeeding class
*Call LaLeche League at 1-800-LALECHE or visit their
website: www.lalecheleague.org
*Talk to other
women who are having success with breastfeeding for tips and techniques.
*Check out books
and video tapes on breastfeeding.
-The
PAT room has several to choose from!
Be sure to take care of yourself during pregnancy and while
nursing.
*Eat a balanced
diet and drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day.
*Avoid tobacco,
alcohol, and drugs. Everything you
ingest goes to your baby.
*Wear supportive
undergarments to prevent over-stretched ligaments.
*Sleep when your
baby sleeps.
What to expect in the beginning:
The first time
you nurse your baby will probably be right after delivery. Until your milk supply “comes in”, your baby
will be nourished by colostrum. This fluid gives your baby protection from
certain bacteria, is high in protein, and is easy to digest. Until your baby is
around 4-6 months old, breast milk can be his complete source of
nutrition. Talk to your pediatrician
about your babies nutrition.
