Using FTP for Web Pages

You can create your own home page on the Internet using any of the popular software packages that create web pages.  After you have created and checked your web pages, you need to upload them to the server at Horizons.

·         Open the WS_FTP

·         Click New

n      Enter a Profile Name

n      Host name = ftp.hit.net

n      User ID = your email user name (i.e. rsoash)

n      Password = your email password

n      It is probably not a good idea to check the Save Pwd box on your machine at school

·         Click Save

·         Click OK

Local System on the right is your computer.  Remote Site on the right is Horizons server.  You will be transferring your web page from your computer to Horizons.

·        Double click on public_html.  If the folder does not exist, create it by clicking the MkDir button.  Name the folder public_html and click OK.  Double click on this new directory.

·        On the left side of the screen, double click the folder where your web page files are located.  Double click the green arrow at the top to move up one level.

·        Highlight the files and folders to post.  You can select multiple files / folders by holding the Ctrl key and clicking.

·        Click the arrow button that points to the right.  This will transfer your files to Horizon’s server.

To exit FTP, hit the Cancel button.  Do not like your machine logged on to your account unless you are actively working on a web page.

If your web pages are well done, they can be linked to the district’s home page.
