·       Topic Selection and Narrowing

“If you don’t know where you are going, how will you ever get there?”

1.  You first need to select a broad topic area.

·                                Select a topic of interest.

·                                Select a topic you can understand.

·                                Listen in class for ideas.

·                                Browse newspaper and current magazines for current topics.

·                                Browse books in the library, scanning the table of contents and index for ideas.

·                                Scan an encyclopedia under an area that interests you.

·                                Scan the textbook's table of contents and index, reading sections of interest.

·                                Browse the Idea Center at Researchpaper.com or look at a Projects Hotlist.

Search for something original.  Teachers tire of reading the same old thing.

2.  Next you need to narrow your broad topic.

3.  When you have your idea narrowed, you need to write a Thesis Statement.

4.  Your next step is to write Research Questions.
