Files, Folders & Backups
Saving Options
Hard Drive(s) C: or D: You will only have a D: drive if you have Windows NT. With NT, you should always use the D: drive, not the C: drive. Files saved to your hard drive are available to anyone who logs onto your machine. If your computer crashes, all of your files will be lost unless you backed them up.
Public folders on the servers (chs_public on 'chs3', cms_public on 'chs3', or ces_public on 'ces3'. These folders are accessible only to students at the appropriate level. CES and CMS students can open and save files to the public folders. CHS students can only open files, so you can still put files in your public folder, but students will have to open the files as read only and then save the file to their student folder.
Your teacher folder on the server Rsoash$ on 'Ces3' (X:). This folder is only accessible when you are logged on as yourself.
Both the teacher and public folders are backed up nightly.
Creating Shortcuts to Student Folders
Teachers have access to all students folders.
Right click on an empty area on the desk top and then New ►Folder and name the folder for your first class. Repeat for each class.
Go to Network Neighborhood
CHS3 or CES3
Double click on the Students folder
Find the first student's folder (first four letters of their last name and first four initials of their first name)
Then right click on the student's folder and Send to ►Desktop Create shortcut) Repeat for each of your students in this class.
You can then drag these shortcuts to the class folder on your desktop.
Repeat for your other classes
It would save you time if you have students create a folder with your name in their home folder and save all your activities to that folder.

You
should backup the files from your hard drive to floppy regularly (at least
monthly) and store the disk in a safe place.
It is a wise idea to rotate disks, backing up on one set of disks one
time and a different set the next time so you have two full backups.
Note: If the floppy becomes full, you will have to
copy your files a few at a time until the disk is full and then use a new
floppy disk.
If
you have created a number of files and cannot remember the specific name or
location of the file, the Find
program can help you.

·

with the name you have selected. Click
on the one you wish to open.
