Short Cuts - These icons allow you to click and start the programs
you use most. The Recycle Bin is an example of a short cut. Always click on the
icon, not the text below.
Recycle Bin - The recycle bin holds files you delete. They are not actually removed from the hard disk until you "empty" the Recycle Bin. This means you can retrieve files you deleted in error. To empty the Recycle Bin, double-click on the Recycle Bin icon then click File on menu bar. Select Empty Recycle Bin. Click Yes.
Task Bar - The task bar is located at the bottom of your screen. By default, it is always visible when Windows is running. Every time you start a program or open a window, a button representing that window or program appears on the task bar. To switch between windows, just click the button for the window you want. When you close a window, its button disappears from the task bar.
Notification Area - The Notification Area is on right side of the Task Bar. Depending on what tasks you have open, indicators will appear, such as a printer representing your print job. Also in the notification area is your clock. To view or change settings, just double-click the time and change the time or date. Click OK to save. Click on the Volume icon to mute or change volume.
Office Bar - The Microsoft Office Bar appears in the upper right hand corner of the
screen. It usually includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access among other options. To
change what appears on the Office Bar, click the icon with the square made of four
different colors and select Customize. Select Buttons and then check only
those you want to appear. You can add items to the Office Bar by dragging the shortcut and
dropping it on the bar.
Minimize/Maximize/Exit
This window lists all the storage devices on your machine, including floppy disks, hard drives, and CD-ROMs. It is a good idea to always leave this open on the Task Bar so that you have access to all files. To use an item in My Computer, double-click the icon.
