Stage 1: Identify Desired Results |
|
State: |
KS |
|
Title: |
Science |
|
Standard(s): |
Benchmark 1: 1. Ask
questions that they can answer by investigating. 2. Plan and
do a simple experiment. 3. Begin
developing abilities to communicate, critique, and analyze their own
investigations and interpret the work of other students. Benchmark
2:
1. Identify
a simple problem; design an approach/plan; implement the plan; solve and
check for reasonableness; and communicate the results. Benchmark
3:
1. Invent a
product to solve problems. 2. Develop
an awareness that women and men of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnic groups
engage in a variety of scientific and technological work. |
|
Understandings: |
|
Inventions are often developed through necessity. Throughout time, inventors and inventions have made an
impact on our lives. Investigations answer questions. |
|
Essential Questions: |
|
How are new inventions created? How have inventions changed people’s lives? Explain the purpose of an investigation. |
|
Knowledge and Skills: |
|
K Steps for scientific investigations Patents are part of the inventing process History of various inventions History of various inventors S Use scientific investigation procedure Tell about new inventions and inventors |
|
Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence |
|
Assessment Summary: |
|
Student Directions: |
|
You have been hired by Bill Nye (the Science Guy) to help
solve problems. He has been receiving
many letters from people questioning how they can make their lives easier. He
would like you to be his assistant. Your
job is to invent something that solves an everyday problem in your life or
the life of someone you know. After you find a problem, we will work through
the scientific process to create, test, and evaluate your new invention. Bill
Nye is going to hold an “Invention Convention” at Cheney Elementary School
showcasing scientific investigation and a model of your new invention. Optional - You have been hired by Bill Nye (the Science
Guy) to help solve problems. He has
been receiving many letters from people questioning how they can make their
lives easier. He would like you to be his assistant. Your job is to research an inventor or an
invention something that solves an everyday problem in your life or the life
of someone you know. After you complete your research you will create a
PowerPoint Presentation. Bill Nye is going to hold an “Invention Convention”
at Cheney Elementary School showcasing scientific investigation and a model
of your invention or you may portray your inventor. |

Group project – In this activity, students will partner
with a classmate and take the role of an inventor or scientist. Students are provided with a problem. The first step is to come up
with possible solutions for their problem. Next, students evaluate each of
their solutions on a set of three criteria that the teacher has provided. Three
Criteria: Is the
solution easy to do? Is the
solution inexpensive? Will the
solution take a long time to put in place? Once
students have evaluated their solutions against the criteria, they will be
asked to test one of their solutions. Students should be able to create a
table, chart, or graph from their results. The solution with the highest
score is the one that has best met the criteria. Once students have finished
this process, the whole class will regroup to discuss some of the solutions
that the students evaluated and the results of their evaluations. |
|
Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and
Instruction |
|
Learning Activities: |
|
Whole class reading: Who Invented This? (4th
grade invention reader) Read aloud books: The Kid Who Invented the Popsicle |
During guided reading, whole class reading, and center
time (See book list below), students will be involved with reading about
various inventors and inventions. On
the final science unit assessment, students are required to explain an
awareness that women and men of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnic groups
engage in a variety of scientific and technological work.
