Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

State:

KS

Title:

Number and Computation

Standard(s):

Kansas

Understandings:

1.Students will understand the value of a number can be represented in many different ways.
2.Patterns exist in numbers that help us solve real world problems.

Essential Questions:

1.What would the world be like without patterns?
2.Are patterns valuable in solving mathematical problems?
3.Is there one way that is most efficient in representing a number's value?

Knowledge and Skills:

K: Students will know: how to measure in order to check their

guess/estimation.

S: Students will be able to: make an estimation and check by

using measurement for accuracy.

Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence

Assessment Summary:

Student Directions: The student will choose a scoop and container.  The student will write down their guess/estimation of the number of scoops it will take to fill the container.  Check by counting the scoops of sand it will take to fill the container.

Rubric: Participation & observation of the sand table activity.

Other assessment evidence to be collected: JELLY BEAN GAME: Students will make predictions using student made jelly bean dispensers. They will guess which color is likely or unlikely to come out of the dispenser next using 2 colors and then 3. Numbers of colors changes their chances of getting a color. Likely/ Unlikely class book will help with use of terminology.

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

Learning Activities: What sequence of teaching and learning experiences will be used?

1.    Hook:  Estimate weight & circumference of a watermelon.

  The student will use a string to estimate & then check the   circumference of the watermelon.

  The student will pick up & estimate the weight and then use

  a scale to determine the weight.

  Slice and eat the watermelon.  Estimate & count seeds.

  Draw a triangle and sponge paint a slice of watermelon.

  Glue on actual watermelon seeds.

2.        Teaching Activities, Assessments & Rethinking opportunities in order:

 1.Guess & check activity with different size scoops and containers at the sand/rice table.

 2.Pumpkin activity in October- Same activities as the watermelon with the

                                   exceptions of not eating the pumpkin, however, we will carve a jack-o-lantern.
