Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

State:

KS       3

Title:

Mathematics

Standard(s):

Uses geometric concepts and procedures in a variety of situations.

Understandings:

user

Shapes are all around us.
Shapes have specific attributes.
Shapes can be combined to form other shapes.
Shapes can be congruent.

Essential Questions:

User

1. How can we sort and classify shapes?
2. Where can we find shapes?
3. What are the properties of different shapes?
4. How can we combine shapes for form other shapes?
5. How do we show two simple shapes to be congruent?

Knowledge and Skills:

K
1. Uses appropriate technology, manipulative and drawings to recognize or investigate properties of geometric figures.
2. Compares, recognizes, draws, and describes the following geometric figures: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and ellipse (oval).
3. Recognizes the following figures from a basic pattern block set: square, triangle, rhombus, hexagon, parallelogram, and trapezoid.
4. Categorizes a composite figure into the shapes used to form it.
5. Combines several geometric shapes to make a larger shape.
6. Shows two simple shapes are congruent by physically fitting one shape on top of the other.

Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence

Assessment Summary:
The student will create quilt blocks that include a square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and ellipse(oval).

Task/Prompt: Shapes

Type: Performance Prompt

Topics: geometry

Summary:
The student will create quilt blocks that include a square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and an ellipse (oval).

Notes:

Student Directions:
You are a quilt pattern designer. You will need to create quilt blocks that include a square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and ellipse (oval). You must use each shape at least once and you may use each shape more than once. Color each shape as coded:
* square - red
* circle - yellow
rectangle - blue
triangle - green
ellipse - purple

Other assessment evidence to be collected:

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

Learning Activities:

W Have the students bring different shaped items from home to put into a "shape museum".

H
What shapes do you see in the room? Brainstorm a list of shapes.

E
Make individual shape books to be used for partner reading.
Using a yellow hexagon from the pattern blocks, how many ways can you make this shape using other block shapes.
Make pattern block designs.
Use ropes to make shapes.

R
Use peer checking to confirm if the quilt block activity was done correctly.

E
The student will create quilt blocks that include a square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and an ellipse(oval).
