| Learning Activities: |
| Where is
the unit going? Students will develop a real understanding of abnormal psychology in what is really two subunits culminating in a summative performance assessment. Students will learn to identify mental disorders, explain their potential causes, and the treatments that are used to address them. We will also explore the prejudices students may unknowingly harbor about mental disorders, introducing factual material by confronting stereotypes and myths. Hook the student Present students with stories of very ordinary people who cope with mental illness. Ask students to imagine some inability to understand and cope with reality, then describe the frequency statistics of disorders. Share stories with students about disorders borne of drug use. Equip the student, explore the subject Student will encounter terminology and current research about disorders and innovations in treatment. Students will then apply this knowledge by brainstorming and role-playing coping and diagnosing scenarios. * Invite doctors and patients from a mental health facility to share their personal experiences with mental illness. * Simulate a psychotic episode: sunglasses with one lense, tape their fingers together with popsicle sticks on the end, flash the lights while they attempt to fill out a administrative form with a large crayon. * Review and discuss videos documenting some of major illnesses. * Students in groups analyze made up or anonymous dreams using a psychological dream dictionary. Rethink and revise opportunities Student will begin problem-solving in groups and present their performance task to the rest of the class. Presentations of disorders will be compared by students to the material studied in this unit. Evaluate performance and progress Performance task: Students will be required to apply their knowledge of psychological disorders to authentic scenarios, describing an illness, potential coping strategies, and treatments. Student Directions: You will demonstrate understanding of the identification and treatment of psychological disorders through one of the following scenarios: Scenario 1: You are a patient suffering from a psychological disorder. Describe your experience by answering the following questions: How has the illness changed your life? What limitations has the illness caused? How has the illness changed the way your patient and those around tehm are treated? How does your patient and those around them cope with this illness? What treatments have you tried? Scenario 3: You are the family member of a patient suffering from a psychological disorder. Describe your experience by answering the following questions: How has the illness changed your life? What limitations has the illness caused? How has the illness changed the way you and those around you are treated? How do you and those around you cope with this illness? What treatments have you tried? In all scenarios, you must outline the following three points: 1.impact of the illness daily life 2.coping mechanisms 3.treatment strategies and side effects experienced Student projects can take the form of a paper, PowerPoint presentation, poster, medical chart, 3D model, brochure-- anything that will communicate genuine understanding. Your final project will ultimately consist of both a written analysis, and an oral presentation. |
