Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

Learning Activities:
Where is the unit going?
Students will develop a real understanding of abnormal psychology in what is really two subunits culminating in a summative performance assessment. Students will learn to identify mental disorders, explain their potential causes, and the treatments that are used to address them.

We will also explore the prejudices students may unknowingly harbor about mental disorders, introducing factual material by confronting stereotypes and myths.

Hook the student
Present students with stories of very ordinary people who cope with mental illness. Ask students to imagine some inability to understand and cope with reality, then describe the frequency statistics of disorders. Share stories with students about disorders borne of drug use.

Equip the student, explore the subject
Student will encounter terminology and current research about disorders and innovations in treatment. Students will then apply this knowledge by brainstorming and role-playing coping and diagnosing scenarios.

* Invite doctors and patients from a mental health facility to share their personal experiences with mental illness.

* Simulate a psychotic episode: sunglasses with one lense, tape their fingers together with popsicle sticks on the end, flash the lights while they attempt to fill out a administrative form with a large crayon.

* Review and discuss videos documenting some of major illnesses.

* Students in groups analyze made up or anonymous dreams using a psychological dream dictionary.

Rethink and revise opportunities
Student will begin problem-solving in groups and present their performance task to the rest of the class. Presentations of disorders will be compared by students to the material studied in this unit.

Evaluate performance and progress

Performance task: Students will be required to apply their knowledge of psychological disorders to authentic scenarios, describing an illness, potential coping strategies, and treatments.
