Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

 

Learning Activities:

1. Show a several advertisements, such as tobacco and alcohol, from magazines and ask them if these ads have any influence over people.
2. In groups students will look at magazines and draw conclusions about the image that the advertisements send to readers.
3. Students will cut out an ad and explain to their group the intended audience of the ad and its message.
4. Students will research an eating disorder.
5. Students do a self test checklist to see if they are at risk of an eating disorder.
6. Students do a checklist to see if a friend or family member is at risk of an eating disorder.
7. Students will role-play a situation as a teacher, coach, or friend with someone they suspect has an eating disorder. They should demonstrate some of the social and health factors that may be affecting the disorder.
8. Students assume the role of a psychologist who is studying the relationship between the social and health aspects of eating disorders. They will choose an eating disorder. Then they will write an article to be published in a health magazine that will include a description of the disorder, its causes and effects and the effect that society has on the development of the disorder, including peer pressure, sports and/or media marketing.
