Summary:
In this unit the students will become familar with the parts, structure, and function of both plant and animal cells. They will make slides of each and clearly distinguish between them through a power-point presentation that includes pictures, terminology, and labeling. This will include single as well as multi-cellular organisms.

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

State:

KS

Title:

Science

Standard(s):

Kansas State Standards
3:1.1Relate the structure of cells, organs, tissues, organ systems, and whole organisms to their functions.

3:1.2Compare organisms composed of single cells with with organisms that are multi-cellular.

Understandings:

user

All living things are composed of cells but the structures of plant and animal cells differ.

Different cells serve different functions of living organisms.

All life forms are made up of cells.

Essential Questions:

User

What is the differnce between plant and animal cells?
What are the similarities between the two?
Why do living things need cells?
How do cells work?
Why do cells die?
What do cells need to survive?
Where do we get new cells?
What happens to dead cells?

Knowledge and Skills:

K
Main differences between plans and animal cells.
Similarities between cell types.
Describe the functions of main cell parts.

S
Prepare wet mounts.
Identify main parts of cells.
Demonstrate use of microscope.
Draw each cell and label parts.
Create a graphic organizer to compare and contrast cells.

Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence

Assessment Summary:
Students will be given cells to analyze. They will then create a presentation that classifies the cells as either plant or animal.

Task/Prompt: Life Forms

Type:Performance Task

Notes:

Student Directions:
You are a scientist and have been given 6 new life form samples. Your task is to analyze the cells and present accurate evidence that classifies them as either plant or animal cells. Your presentation should reveal main characteristics and support proven facts.
Will this be oral? written? pp?

Other assessment evidence to be collected:

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

Learning Activities:

W
Introduce the essential question and post this on the classroom bulletin board. In their Science Log they will write a brief summary of their knowledge of cells and their purpose/function.

H
Students will examine prepared slides of various cells and draw features that look similar and different. They will use a graphic organizer(Venn Diagram)

E
Microscope quiz
Graphic organizer(Venn, Compare/ Contrast)
Group microscope observations
Classroom discussions
Drawings of cells
Science log notes
Power-point presentation
R
Students work in teams and research cell structures of other organisms(bacteria/viruses) they then will determine how this are related or differ from their own cell structure. They will orally give their findings to the class and be prepared to justify reasoning.
E
Students will be given cells to analyze. They will then create a power point presentation that classifies the cells as either plant or animal. In this they will include graphics and part identities.
