Summary:
This is a music theory unit designed to introduce diatonic harmony. The students will explore major scales, diatonic intervals and end the unit by composing 12 bar blues using diatonic harmony.

Assessment Summary:
Students will be given a diatonic melody and will be asked to compose a harmony pert (3 voice min.) and then perform their composition.

Key Criteria: Through their written composition and performance the students will show evidence of diatonic harmony through good chord progressions, showing some evidence of voice leading and by enhancing the melody.

Other Evidence: Quizzes on major scales and key signatures. Work sheets on chord qualities, building chords. Worksheets on harmonizing a major scale. Performance assessments on instruments and/or voice on scales, chords. Aural skills on intervals.

You are composer who has entered a contest. You will be given a diatonic melody and will be asked to compose a harmony pert (3 voice minimum) and then perform your composition.
The judges will be looking for evidence of diatonic harmony through good chord progressions, showing some evidence of voice leading and by enhancing the melody.
