2. Determine if anything that is occurring in the government today is violating what the Constitution has outlined as being either a State's rights or the rights of the Federal Government

Essential Questions:

1. Why was the separation of the State and Federal governments responsibilities outlined in the Constitution?
2. Were did the founding fathers get their ideas of what should be responsibilities of the state and what should be responsibilities of the nation?
3. How did these men make those decisions?

 

Knowledge and Skills:

1. Know the basic reason for a Constitution
2. Understand that some rules are needed for a country and that they need a method for change
3. Be able to interpret the Constitution for today
4. Compare the successes of the U.S. Constitution with constitution in other countries


 

Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence

 

Assessment Summary:
1. Give them situations and have them reveal their understanding by giving support from the Constitution. (Determine if the situations are the responsibility of the state or federal government)
2. Have them compare and contrast the United States with other countries that have a large national government and smaller governmental agencies such as Canada and its provinces
3. Have them write a constitution for a class within a build and that building to determine what is a classes rights and what is the rights of the building

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

 

Learning Activities:

W. Understand what the State's responsibilities are and what is reserved for the Federal government
H. Take away their rights to chew gum in class and have them brainstorm for ideas on if I can really do that if it is not against school rules
E. Read through the areas of the Constitution that deal with the responsibilities of the State and Federal government
R. Give them situations and have them draw parallels with the State and Federal governments and use the Constitution as a basis for the argument
E. Have them write a Constitution that includes legislation for appropriate schoo
l functioning
