Importance of a Library / Library Cataloging Manual - Written Standards for Consistency

Why are catalogers so picky?

·        Purpose of cataloging

o   See if library has the materials you need

o   Find the materials they have on the shelves (or externally)

·        Lost books (SC & Collective Biography)

·        Retrieval systems must work for YOUR patrons, or it is a waste of time.

·        It’s okay to “stretch” MARC format if there is a need, if you understand what you are doing and if you document what you have done.

·        Library of Congress Subject Heading / Free-floating & Historical subheadings books (65x only)

·        Union catalog as authority file (after clean-up)

·        Built-in authority control in automation system

·        Send out your database periodically
